From: Benjamin F. Elliott Subject: ADRICS: The Chris Heer Award Date: Thursday, 11 May 2000 13:23 (Special Note: Interesting how the ISP chooses the very moment I try to send out this award to experience technical difficulties.) Ladies, gentlemen, and telemarketers, we are here to present "The Chris Heer award (for the person you most want to return to the net)". Unlike the other Adric awards, this one will take a somewhat graver tone. No partying in the aisles, no gratuitous gunplay in the buffet line, and no gushing acceptance speeches. This award is in honor of those of us who are gone. They are not dead (thank goodness), but they are no longer with us (at least as of nominating time). These are people that we are slowly accepting we will never see here again. In a sense, this award is a celebration of their time with us. The laughs we shared, the insights they passed along, the general sense that rec.arts.drwho was a unique place. We may be sad that they are gone, but we salute them for all they did when they were around, and wish them the best wherever they may be. First, an honorable mention to all those who were nominated but were not finalists. 14. Richard Smeltzer 13. FireballXL5 12. Richard ‘Halibut' Salter 12. Mariane DeSautels 12. Jeanne Cavelos 11. Richard Jones 11. Treykorte 10. Chris Heer 9. Daniel O'Malley 8. Susannah Tiller 7. Ben "Saulchurch" Varkentine 6. Peter Anghelides So now, I will read out the names of the finalists. [Clears throat] Maine Public Television WUFT Gainesville, Florida WTBU Indianapolis, Indiana Lousiana Public Broadcasting .. wait a minute. Sorry, wrong ceremony. [Reshuffles papers] The finalists: David A. McIntee (Dangermouse) - incredibly witty, author of many of the best Doctor Who novels, and serves a very potent cranberry drink at dinner Kate Orman - the woman who turned chocolate sauce into a torture device, fills the pages of many early quotefiles, and saved So Vile A Sin from joining the missing episodes Paul Cornell - he created the direction of the NAs, came through here like a series of tidal waves, and always leaves passionate debates in his wake Christopher H. Bidmead - created the character of Nyssa and infused bizarre science into the series without it looking like technobabble Ben Aaronovitch - wrote a controversial NA, a beloved NA, and tried to write So Vile A Sin. And you have to love a guy with a first name like that, even if he is having it abominably shortened from 8 to 3 letters. And now, this year's winner of "The Chris Heer award (for the person you would most like to see return to the net)" is ... David A McIntee. Congratulations, David, wherever you are. By the way, the runners-up came up as: 1 - Kate Orman 2 - Christopher H. Bidmead 3 (tie) - Paul Cornell 3 (tie) - Ben Aaronovitch Thanks to you all. Come back soon. [Walks off stage. Silence ensues.] Benjamin F. Elliott * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!
