From: K. Michael Wilcox Subject: ADRICS: Best Drama Long Fiction Date: Saturday, 20 May 2000 8:03 A giant screen descends from the rafters, and an image snaps into focus. Two women in shorts are leaving a film lot, walking away from the camera. The camera zooms in on their rear ends. "Yeah, baby," a smarmy voice crows. "Sparky!" another voice shouts. "Stop messing about. We'll be going live any second now." "Aww." The camera pans over to a bit of white tie in front of white shirt. After a second, it zooms back out, revealing that the white shirt and tie are being worn by a pale, bespectacled young man. He is staring at the camera expectantly. After several seconds of silence, Sparky's voice asks, "So, how will I know when we're transmitting?" The man in white sighs. "You'll see a blinking red light." "Oh, umm, ahh, three, two, one." The man suddenly bursts into a grin. "Greetings from the set of... whatever it's called this week. I'm K. Michael Wilcox, here to present the award for 'Best Dramatic Fiction, More Than One Post'. The nominees are: 'Alorin' by Beck McLaughlin 'The Evolution Machine' (Back From the Dead Series) by Paul Smith 'The House at Little Sarfield' (Back From the Dead Series) by Paul Smith 'Not a Rational Process' by Jeri Massi 'Nyssa's End' by Graham Woodland and 'The Writing on the Wall' by Steve and Paul Benson and the Adric goes to..." He frowns at the camera until, after an uncomfortable pause, an envelope wiggles up into view. Mr. Wilcox impatiently grabs the envelope and opens it. "...'Nyssa's End' by Graham Woodland!" he announces, smiling broadly. He continues to smile for several seconds, then glares toward the camera. "That went well," he deadpans. "You better do better than that when they cut back here for my acceptance speeches." "Umm," Sparky's voice says, "I think they already did those awards, and you, umm, lost, dude." "I what? What do you mean I..." Mr. Wilcox's response is cut off as the image fades and the screen retracts.
